Etymology
Formed from the prefix εκ- ('out of') and the verb φράζω ('to point out, declare, tell'), giving the sense of 'speaking outward' what is inside. The ancient ἐκφράζω meant 'to recount in full, describe vividly' and is the source of the rhetorical term ἔκφρασις (ekphrasis), the literary description of a work of art. The deeper origin of φράζω itself is disputed and possibly pre-Greek, so no secure Indo-European root can be assigned.
