Etymology
From Ancient Greek εἰσβολή ('a throwing in, invasion, entrance, mountain pass'), a deverbal noun from εἰσβάλλω ('to throw into, invade'), formed from εἰς ('into') + βάλλω ('to throw, cast'). The verb βάλλω goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *gʷelh₁- ('to throw, reach by throwing'). In Modern Greek the meaning has settled on a forceful military or figurative entry.
