Etymology

The noun derives from the verb στέλλω 'to set in order, equip, dispatch, send', built on the o-grade στολ- of the root στελ-. It first denoted an equipped expedition or naval armament and from there came to mean 'fleet'. The same root gives στολή 'attire/equipment', ἀπόστολος 'one sent off (apostle)' and ἐπιστολή 'letter (epistle)'.
