Σύμπτωμα comes from the verb συμπίπτω, itself built from σύν (together, with) and πίπτω (to fall). In ancient use it meant a chance occurrence or a thing that befalls someone. Greek medical writers narrowed the sense to a bodily sign that accompanies a disease, and this is the meaning that passed into Latin and then into English as symptom.
