Etymology

Greek γραβάτα is a loanword, most likely from Italian cravatta, itself from French cravate. The French word traces to Croatian mercenaries (Croates in French) who served in France in the 17th century and wore a distinctive cloth around the neck. The garment took the name of the people who popularized it, and the word then spread across Europe, including into Greek.
