Κοντινός is built from the adverb κοντά, meaning near or close, plus the adjective-forming suffix -ινός. That same suffix turns other time or place words into adjectives, as in πρωινός, morning, from πρωί, morning time. The origin of κοντά itself is debated among Greek etymologists, with one common theory linking it to ancient κοντός, a pole, on the idea of being within a pole's length of something.
