Etymology

Άρωμα comes from Ancient Greek ἄρωμα, meaning spice or sweet herb. Its ultimate origin is uncertain: some linguists suspect it is not native Greek vocabulary, but a loan tied to the ancient spice trade, possibly from a Semitic or Pre-Greek source. The word passed into Latin as aroma and from there into English, French, and other European languages, with its meaning narrowing over time to 'perfume' or 'pleasant smell'.
