Etymology

Greek borrowed the word directly from German Nazi, a colloquial clipping of Nationalsozialist (National Socialist). The clipped form spread across many European languages in the 1930s as the party rose to power. Greek took it in as an indeclinable loanword rather than adapting it to native noun endings.
