Etymology
From Ancient Greek στολή (stolḗ) 'equipment, array, garment, raiment', a deverbal noun from στέλλω (stéllō) 'to set in order, equip, array, dispatch'. The sense narrowed from 'that with which one is equipped' to the clothing itself, giving the modern meaning 'uniform, costume'. The same Greek word, via Latin stola, gave English 'stole' (a long ecclesiastical or ornamental garment).
