Etymology

From Ancient Greek μνήμη (mnḗmē) 'memory, remembrance,' derived from the verb μιμνήσκω (mimnḗskō) 'to remind, call to mind.' Both trace back to the Proto-Indo-European root *men- 'to think.' The same root underlies the goddess Mnemosyne (personified Memory), and via Greek gave English 'mnemonic' and 'amnesia.'
