Etymology

Formed from the noun κανόνας (older κανών) 'rule, standard, canon' plus the highly productive verbal suffix -ίζω, so the literal sense is 'to bring into line with the rule, to regulate'. The ancient κανών first meant a straight rod or measuring rule, and was itself derived from κάννα 'reed'. Because κάννα is a loanword of Semitic origin, the word has no inherited Indo-European root.
