Etymology
Κανονισμός comes from the verb κανονίζω, meaning to regulate or set in order, which itself derives from κανών, an ancient Greek word for a straight rod or measuring rule. The suffix -ισμός turns the verb into an abstract noun for the result of that action, a system of rules. Κανών itself is widely believed to be an early borrowing into Greek from a Semitic word for reed, since reeds were used as measuring sticks.
