Etymology
Γενναίος comes from the same stem as γέννα and γεννάω, meaning to beget or give birth, and is linked to γένος, meaning race, stock, or kind. The adjective originally described someone of good birth or noble stock. Over time its sense narrowed from noble by birth to noble in character, and finally to the modern sense of brave or courageous.
