Etymology

Κατανόηση is a noun formed from the verb κατανοώ, which combines the prefix κατα- (here used as an intensifier, roughly "thoroughly") with νοώ, "to perceive or think," itself from νους, "mind." The suffix -ηση turns the verb into an abstract noun, much as "-ing" or "-sion" does in English. The deeper origin of νους is debated among linguists, so no Indo-European root can be stated with confidence.
