Etymology
κατανοώ is a compound of the prefix κατά, here used to intensify meaning ('thoroughly, down to the core'), and νοώ, 'to perceive with the mind, to think', from the noun νοῦς, 'mind, intellect'. The compound already existed in Ancient Greek with the sense of observing or grasping something closely, and Modern Greek kept it for deeper mental comprehension. The root νοῦς itself has no securely established origin further back, so no proto-Indo-European root is given here.
