Etymology

Έλξη comes from ancient Greek ἕλξις (hélxis), a noun built on the verb ἕλκω (hélkō), meaning to drag or pull. The suffix turns the verb into a noun naming the action itself, so it once meant simply the act of pulling. Its origin before that point is not settled. Some scholars treat ἕλκω as inherited Indo-European vocabulary, others as a word Greek picked up from a pre-Greek substrate language, so no reliable root can be given.
