Etymology
Ελάφι comes from Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos), the ordinary word for deer, which was originally a common-gender noun covering both sexes. In later Greek a diminutive form, ελάφιον, took hold and contracted to ελάφι, shifting the word to neuter gender along the way. The old diminutive sense has faded, and ελάφι is now simply the everyday word for deer in Modern Greek.
