Τραυματισμός is built on τραύμα, the ancient Greek word for a wound, which itself comes from the verb τιτρώσκω, to wound. Greek adds the verb-forming suffix -ίζω to get τραυματίζω, to injure, and then the noun suffix -σμός to name the act or result of that action. So τραυματισμός literally means the act of wounding, or its outcome: an injury.
