Etymology
Λόφος is an ancient Greek word already found in Homer, where it meant both the crest of a helmet and a raised piece of ground. The two senses share the idea of something that rises up from a base. Linguists such as Beekes consider the word likely to come from a pre-Greek substrate language rather than from Indo-European roots, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
