Etymology
The word combines the alpha-privative prefix α- (not, without) with σχετός, an old verbal adjective built on σχ-, the aorist stem of έχω (to have, to hold). So the root sense is not-holding, not-connected. From the same stem Greek gets σχέση (relation) and σχετικός (relevant), which is why άσχετος reads as their direct negation.
