Etymology

The verb comes from ancient Greek ὑπηρετέω, built on the noun ὑπηρέτης. That noun literally meant an under-rower, a crewman seated on the lower bank of a trireme who rowed out of public view. From this the word shifted to mean an assistant or servant, someone who does the unseen supporting work, and eventually the general sense of serving a person, institution, or cause.
