Etymology
Καρέκλα entered Greek from Venetian carega, itself from Latin cathedra, meaning a seat with a back. Cathedra in turn came from Greek καθέδρα, from κατά (down) and ἕδρα (seat, from the verb root meaning to sit). So the word made a round trip: it left Greek in ancient form, changed through Latin and Venetian, and came back into Modern Greek with a new shape and a plain meaning, chair.
