Etymology

Έκπτωση comes from ancient Greek ἔκπτωσις (ekptōsis), a noun built on ἐκπίπτω (ekpiptō), "to fall out of" or "to fall off". That verb combines the prefix ἐκ- ("out of") with πίπτω ("to fall"). The core sense of falling extended over time to a fall in price, which is why the word now means discount, and it kept a narrower legal sense of losing or forfeiting a right.
