Etymology

Βρώμικος comes from the Greek noun βρώμα, meaning stench or filth, joined with the common adjectival suffix -ικος, meaning pertaining to or characterized by. The root itself traces to the ancient Greek βρόμος, a foul smell, whose deeper origin is uncertain and possibly pre-Greek. The word kept its sense of filth and foul smell through to today, and gained figurative uses for corrupt or underhanded behavior.
