Ακουμπώ comes from a medieval Greek verb built on the Latin accumbere, meaning to lie down or recline, as diners did at a Roman table. Greek speakers absorbed the Latin stem cumb- and attached native prefixes and endings, narrowing the sense over time from reclining to the simpler act of leaning or resting something against a surface. The Latin root itself traces back to a common Indo-European base meaning to lie down.
