Etymology
πτώση comes from ancient Greek πτῶσις, a noun built on the verb πίπτω, meaning to fall. Greek inherited πίπτω from the Proto-Indo-European root *peth₂-, which meant both to fly and to fall, the same root behind πέτομαι, to fly. That overlap made sense to early speakers: a fall was often just a flight gone wrong. Grammarians later reused πτῶσις as a technical term for noun case, treating each case as a form that had fallen away from the plain nominative.
