Etymology
μυστήριο descends from Ancient Greek μυστήριον, a secret rite or hidden truth known only to initiates. The word is built on the same base as μύστης, an initiate, and μύω, to close the eyes or lips, the physical act tied to keeping a secret. Latin borrowed it as mysterium, and from there it passed into English as mystery.
