Etymology
Ξύπνιος comes from the verb ξυπνώ/ξυπνάω, "to wake up," which continues the Ancient Greek ἔξυπνος, a compound of ἐξ- ("out of") and ὕπνος ("sleep"). The Ancient Greek ὕπνος goes back to the PIE root *swep-, "to sleep." The word therefore literally frames waking as a state of having come out of sleep, and Modern Greek extended that literal sense to cover mental sharpness as well.
