Etymology
Χάος comes from ancient Greek χάος, meaning a yawning gap or void. It is linked to the verb χάσκω, to gape or yawn wide. Hesiod used it in his Theogony to name the first state of existence, an empty gap before the ordered world took shape. From there it passed into Latin and then English essentially unchanged.
