Ασχολούμαι comes from the ancient noun ἀσχολία, built from the negative prefix ἀ- and σχολή, meaning leisure or free time. The original sense was a lack of leisure, that is, the business that fills one's time. Ancient σχολή is also the root behind English school, since a school was originally a place where people gathered in their free time to talk and learn. The modern verb keeps the old middle voice form, so Greek has no everyday active form ασχολώ.
