Απασχόληση is the noun formed from the verb απασχολώ, to keep someone occupied or busy. That verb combines the prefix από- with ασχολώ, which goes back to ασχολία, the negation of σχολή, the ancient Greek word for leisure or free time. So the underlying idea is a reversal of leisure: being kept busy, engaged, or employed. Σχολή itself is tied to the verb έχω, to have or hold, from the Proto-Indo-European root for holding fast.
