τομή comes from the ancient Greek verb τέμνω, meaning 'I cut,' which traces back to the PIE root for cutting. The suffix -ή turns the verb root into a noun for the act or result of cutting, giving 'a cut' or 'an incision.' The same root produced τόμος, 'a piece cut off,' the source of English 'tome,' and ἄτομος, 'uncuttable,' the source of English 'atom.' Many English medical and scientific terms, such as 'anatomy' and the surgical suffix '-tomy,' descend from this same Greek family.
