Etymology
Χειρούργος is a compound of χείρ (hand) and the suffix -ουργός, from ἔργον (work). Together the parts mean a hand-worker, someone who works with their hands. Ancient Greek used the word for a manual craftsman as well as a physician who operated. The English word surgeon traces directly back to this Greek term, through Latin chirurgus and Old French cirurgien.
