Etymology
σύγχρονος joins the prefix σύν- (together, with) to χρόνος (time), plus the adjectival ending -ος. The literal sense is 'sharing the same time', which gave rise to both 'synchronous' and 'contemporary, modern'. The word passed into English directly as 'synchronous' through New Latin scientific vocabulary.
