Χωρίο comes from Ancient Greek χωρίον, a diminutive of χώρα (land, place) or χῶρος (spot, site). In antiquity it meant a small plot of land or a distinct spot. From that concrete sense of a bounded spot, Greek extended the word to mean a bounded section of a text, and that is the sense modern Greek kept. The old literal sense of a plot of land was taken over by other words, while a separate sound-changed descendant, χωριό, came to mean village.
