Etymology
Καρδιακός is built from καρδιά, the Modern Greek word for heart, plus the adjectival suffix -ακός, meaning roughly "pertaining to." Καρδιά descends from Ancient Greek καρδία, which goes back to a very old Indo-European word for heart. The same root produced the Latin word for heart and, through Latin, the English word cardiac.
