Etymology
κωμικός comes from κῶμος, the revel or festive procession linked to the origins of comic performance, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning "pertaining to." The word entered Latin as comicus and from there passed into French and English. Its root sense ties it closely to κωμῳδία, "comedy," the staged form that grew out of those revels.
