Etymology
Κωμωδία comes from ancient Greek κῶμος (a revel or festive procession) joined to ᾠδή (song). The word originally named the song performed by revelers at Dionysiac festivals, and it later came to mean the comic plays that grew out of that tradition. Aristophanes and his contemporaries fixed the term as the label for the genre in classical Athens.
