Etymology

Τροχόσπιτο is a modern Greek compound built from τροχός, wheel, and σπίτι, house. Τροχός descends from ancient Greek and is tied to the verb τρέχω, to run. Σπίτι itself is not inherited from ancient Greek but comes from Byzantine Greek σπίτιν, borrowed from Latin hospitium, meaning lodging or guest-house. The two parts were joined in the twentieth century to name the wheeled house we now call a caravan.
