Etymology

σπίτι derives from Medieval Greek σπίτιον, a reduced form of the Latin loanword hospitium ('guest-lodging, hospitality'). Over the Byzantine period it gradually displaced Ancient Greek οἶκος as the ordinary word for 'house'. The Latin term goes back to hospes ('host, guest'), ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *gʰóstis ('stranger, guest, host').
