Etymology
λοιπόν is the neuter singular of the adjective λοιπός ('remaining, the rest'), frozen into adverbial use. λοιπός derives from the verb λείπω ('to leave, to be missing, to lack'), going back to the PIE root *leykʷ- ('to leave behind'). From the literal sense 'as for the rest' it developed into the connective 'so, then, therefore' and finally into the ubiquitous conversational opener of Modern Greek.
