Etymology

From Ancient Greek παιδίον (paidíon), the diminutive of παῖς (paîs, 'child'), whose stem is παιδ-. The original diminutive force ('little child') faded, and the form became the everyday word for 'child' in Modern Greek. The ancient ending -ίον reduced to the modern neuter -ί.
