παιδικός is built from παῖς/παιδός, meaning child, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. The origin of παῖς itself is not settled. Some linguists connect it to a small set of words for young or small, but others, including Beekes, argue it comes from a Pre-Greek substrate word rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary. Because of this dispute, no secure deeper root can be given.
