Etymology
Μαύρος comes from Ancient Greek μαῦρος, meaning dim, dark, or blind. Its origin before that is not established with confidence; standard reference works treat it as a word of uncertain background, possibly from a pre-Greek substrate. Over time the sense narrowed from general dimness to the color black itself. It later gave rise to the personal name Maurus and the term for the Moors, though that link is historical rather than etymological proof of source.
