Etymology

The word comes from ancient Greek leitourgia, a compound of leitos (public, of the people) and ergon (work). In classical Athens it named a public duty, such as funding a warship or a festival, that a wealthy citizen paid for on behalf of the community. Christian Greek later narrowed one sense of the word to the public service of worship, giving us liturgy. Modern Greek kept both threads: the neutral sense of a function or operation, and the religious sense of a church service.
