Etymology
Πολιτικός comes from πολίτης, "citizen," itself built on πόλις, the city-state that organized Greek public life. The suffix -ικός turns the noun into an adjective meaning "pertaining to." So πολιτικός originally meant "of the citizen" or "of the city-state," and only later narrowed to the modern sense of "political." The origin of πόλις itself is uncertain and may predate Indo-European Greek, so no secure PIE root can be given.
