Etymology
The word entered Greek as παράδεισος from Old Persian, where it denoted a walled royal park or hunting garden. Xenophon used it in this sense to describe the pleasure gardens of Persian kings. Later, Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible chose it to render the Garden of Eden, and from there it took on its religious meaning of heaven. The Persian term itself is thought to trace back to an Iranian compound meaning "around" plus "wall" or "shape," describing an enclosed space.
