Δικαστής comes from the verb δικάζω, meaning to judge or try a case, with the agent suffix -τής attached to mark the person who does the action. Δικάζω in turn derives from δίκη, meaning justice or a legal case, one of the oldest and most central words in Greek legal vocabulary. The root behind δίκη traces to a Proto-Indo-European verb meaning to show or point out, since a judgment originally meant pointing to what was right.
