Etymology
From Ancient Greek δίκη (díkē) 'custom, order, right, judgment, justice', which in mythology was personified as Δίκη, the goddess of justice. It derives from the Proto-Indo-European root *deyḱ- 'to show, point out', the same root behind δείκνυμι 'to show' — justice being conceived as the 'way pointed out' or the established norm. In Modern Greek the word has narrowed mainly to the legal sense of a court trial.
