αβέβαιοςuncertainEtymology
βεβαίως is the adverb formed from the adjective βέβαιος ('firm, steadfast, certain'). βέβαιος in turn derives, with reduplication, from the verb βαίνω ('to step, stand'), so the underlying image is of something that 'stands firmly' and is therefore sure. The adverbial sense 'firmly, securely' broadened into the modern affirming sense 'certainly, of course'.
